Saskatchewan Senior's Drug Plan
Save on Prescriptions: The Saskatchewan Seniors’ Drug Plan
For many seniors in Saskatchewan, the rising cost of medication can be a significant burden on a fixed income. Fortunately, the provincial government offers a special Seniors’ Drug Plan designed to ensure that those aged 65 and over have access to affordable prescriptions.
Under this programme, eligible seniors pay a maximum of only $25 per prescription for drugs that are listed on the Saskatchewan Formulary. This cap is a vital safety net for those who require multiple medications each month.
Who is Eligible?
To qualify for the $25 cap, you must be a resident of Saskatchewan, be 65 years of age or older, and meet the following income requirements:
- Single Seniors: Your net income must be $79,487 or less.
- Couples: Your combined net income must be $79,487 or less.
If you receive the Seniors Income Plan (SIP) or the federal Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), you are often automatically enrolled or prioritised for this coverage.
How the $25 Cap Works
Once you are enrolled, you simply present your Health Services card at any pharmacy in the province. If the medication is an "approved" drug, you will pay no more than $25. If the drug is cheaper than $25, you only pay the lower price. It is important to note that this cap does not apply to "speciality" drugs or those not covered by the provincial formulary.
How to Apply
If you are not already receiving this benefit, you can apply through the Ministry of Health. Many seniors find that their eligibility is updated automatically when they file their annual tax return, but it is always wise to double-check your status.
